Having just premièred eCaro v.0.1, an improvisation project with my good friend Paulo Maria Rodrigues, we will be playing it again at Casa da Música on June 11th 2011, as part of another great Handmade Music @ Digitópia. See you there!

1st presentation of eCaro – electro+acoustic research objects -, an improvisation for expanded piano, using both acoustic and electroacoustic resources, by myself and Paulo Maria Rodrigues.


We used a Continuum Fingerboard, an iPhone with Pan Drum Full, a Moogerfooger MF-101, six EBows (you can see the original exploration on the video below), some coil pickups and contact microphones, a mbira and several homemade mallets. By using contact loudspeakers (see picture below) on top of the soundboard, all of the sounds have the same origin and ‘sonic print’. It also enables the use of string resonance as a reverb for the electronic sounds.


Presented at Performa’11, it is a condensed 20-minute version. We can only improve from here! ;)

I’m always reluctant about writing “coming soon” on a website: “soon” can linger for too long! Where is GameLan? When will it be available for download? Well, the truth is it is almost ready, but the development has been frozen for several months now. I’m currently very, very busy and completely focused trying to keep up with the deadline to finish my PhD, so no news on other software will come in the next few months.


The good news? As soon as I finish it I’ll post my biggest music software project ever! The bad news: this won’t happen until May/June and GameLan will have to wait until then…

Várias pessoas me têm perguntado o porquê de ter uma página apenas em Inglês. A razão é simples: manter uma página bilingue implica despender o dobro do tempo na sua manutenção e, dado que a maioria das visitas vem de países onde o Português não é língua oficial, optei por não ostracizar estes visitantes.


Não obstante, tenho plena consciência e orgulho da minha portugalidade. Será um lugar comum, depois de Pessoa, afirmar que «A minha pátria é a língua portuguesa», mas de facto sinto muitas vezes que nenhum factor foi tão determinante na construção da minha personalidade, da minha forma de ver o mundo e do modo como me identifico e relaciono com os outros como o facto de ter sido o Português a língua que primeiro me ajudou a pensar. Ao ponto de ser o elemento que mais falta me faz quando estou fora do país… no regresso, o mais forte sentimento de chegada não é o da visão do território ou da bandeira, mas o de ouvir, falar e ler a minha língua.

The CD with the recording of ‘obra com título longo*‘, interpreted by Performa Ensemble, is finally out! It was published by Phonedition Records and it also includes works by Carlos Marecos, João Pedro Oliveira, Ângela Lopes, Petra Bachratá, Patrícia Almeida, Sara Carvalho and Evgueni Zoudilkine. The name chosen for the CD is quite special to me: ‘Momentum’, the name of both the contemporary music ensemble I co-founded and conducted for several years and of the contemporary music cycles I helped organize while an undergraduate at DeCA – UA.

My new piece ‘ex nihilo’ (out of nothing) was selected to be performed at the 89th edition of the World New Music Days festival, to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, 10 – 15 April 2011. It is a great honor to be performed at the festival organized by the International Society for Contemporary Music since 1922! ‘ex nihilo’, for vibraphone quartet, will be premièred by the ‘biNg bang’ percussion ensemble on the opening concert. It is based on the same material as ‘obra com título longo*‘, which will be released on CD very soon.

Narrativas Sonoras is a very simple audio sequencer that uses granular synthesis at it’s core engine. Its original design dates back to end of 2006. The first implementation of the software employed a Processing user interface controlling a hidden Max/MSP sound engine. The second generation ran entirely on Max/MSP, with the graphical user interface, still developed using Processing, running on the java layer available within Max/MSP.

This is third generation and it relies on Processing alone, thanks to the beads audio library, thus being truly multi-platform and providing easier access to the source. The essential element of Narrativas Sonoras’ user interface was based on an example one can find in Processing’s Examples folder – Storing Input. The second generation of Narrativas Sonoras was awarded with an honorable mention at Lomus 2008 – International Music Software Contest.
